| Conventional cutting boards are of two types: either strips of wood glued together or one solid piece of wood. Problems with these are warping in both cases and glue failure in the case of strips put together. The Floating Dovetail Board, however, combines functional and esthetic solutions using a single piece of Birdseye Maple, which is figured hard Maple. This North American dense wood makes this clever design a beautiful and practical choice for various uses at home. The floating dovetail is made of Jatoba (Brazilian Cherry), which is a hard, reddish, dense wood that complements the Birdseye Maple in color and keeps it from warping too much. The Jatoba dovetail is pinned in the center, keeping it in place while also allowing the Birdseye Maple to expand in high humidity and shrink in dry conditions. Since wooden cutting boards are exposed to a lot of water, some warping is inevitable. With this design warping can be corrected by sanding the high spots on the feet. The finish is 100% walnut oil with no additives or solvents. |
